Homecare trains home caregivers in Ukraine

On 24-28th October, AO Homecare is conducting a training course in the city of Odessa, Ukraine. The activity is part of the “Increasing Access to Quality Home Care Services for Patients Dependent on Others in the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine” project. The project is supported by Czech Republic Humanitarian Aid and the Czech Embassy in Chisinau, and aims to strengthen the capacities of caregivers in Ukraine to provide medical and social home care for individuals in vulnerable situations.

The agenda is diverse and focuses on developing the skills and knowledge of caregivers so that they can provide quality care to those dependent on assistance. With a total of 40 academic hours, the course covers a range of topics, including ethical and legal aspects, as well as practical details related to patient care.

The event begins by defining the principles and terminology in home care, helping participants understand the essence and complexity of this field. It examines the 14 fundamental human needs, as well as signs of independence and possible issues of dependence, providing a comprehensive perspective on patient needs.

The course also delves into ethical aspects and values in providing home care, as well as the basic rules for personnel providing home care, considering the legal basis for this activity. The rights and responsibilities of professionals providing home care are also important topics addressed in the training.

Another crucial point is the interaction of informal caregivers with medical personnel in long-term care, aiming to prevent professional burnout. Furthermore, special attention is given to respecting human rights in the provision of home assistance and care, including information confidentiality, respecting personal privacy, and the freedom of choice.

Communication with elderly individuals and those with various disabilities is an extensively covered topic in the training course to ensure effective and empathetic interactions with patients. Additionally, subjects like patient hygiene and nutrition, physical exercises, care for patients with various medical conditions, and monitoring their health are addressed.

Other topics covered are as follows: the care of patients with infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, tuberculosis, and other conditions so that caregivers are prepared to provide appropriate care in these cases; diabetes and its complications, including methods for monitoring blood glucose levels and the proper approach to hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia as well as topics related to home care, providing caregivers with comprehensive training that will enable them to improve the quality of life for individuals dependent on their assistance.

The  project “Increasing Access to Quality Home Care Services for Patients Dependent on Others” will significantly contribute to improving the lives of the most vulnerable populations in Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.

Additionally, the project provides support for the provision of medical and social services at the Sfânta Agata centers in Ocnita and Sfânta Anna centers in Vulcănești, Republic of Moldova. This will increase access to these services for a significant number of vulnerable individuals in Moldova.

Furthermore, the project, besides its stated objectives, seeks to develop expertise in the provision of quality medical and social care, ultimately contributing to the improvement of the lives of the most vulnerable populations.
