HELP – HILFE ZUR SELBSTHILFE THE SYNONYM OF HOPE

On March 28th  2023, “HOMECARE” Association hosted the representatives of the International Organization Help – Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe, Germany, represented by Katrin Trushevskyy, program coordinator for Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova and Chandni Kapoor, Program Administrator. The visit was occasioned by the completion of the project “Medical and social services for Ukrainian refugees from Moldova-Phase II”, implemented between 01.12.2022 and 31.03.2023.

“Help – Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe” representatives visited Răzeni village, Ialoveni district, where “HOMECARE” Association presented the services provided to Ukrainian refugees. The partners informed each other about their difficulties and needs, while also setting up the services for the future.

Accompanied by the nurses of “HOMECARE”Association, Elena Sirețeanu and Raisa Harabagiu, the representatives of “Help – Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe” visited two Ukrainian refugees families. A special impression was left by Constantin and Zinaida Sapescu, a family of refugees from Vyshneve, Kiev region.

Constantin, the head of a family with 5 children, narrated the ordeal they went through from the beginning of the war until they settled in Razeni village. They wanted to stay together no matter the hardships. They were aware that all 7 of them could not be accommodated in one family, so they chose a house in the town that had been destroyed by fire. The house was about to collapse, but it was the only thread of hope they grabbed to with both hands. They stayed in a tent for a week, during which they set up a small annex to the house. Half a year, seven souls shared about seven m2. Moreover, Rada – the eldest daughter was pregnant. Constantin Sapescu tells that they received construction materials and the help of the community. “With the help of people we rebuilt the wall and the stove. They brought us what they could, what they had, some a window, other a door. We thank the organization “Help – Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe” which repeatedly helped us with clothing, blankets, linen and medicine. It meant enormously to us.”

Children were the ones who suffered the most and needed psychological assistance. The distance from home, the hardships inherent in their refugee situation, created a psychological background that was hard to bear. This status was also transmitted to the parents. The multilateral assistance provided by the HOMECARE employees helped them overcome all the difficulties, and now the children are integrated into the educational system, school and kindergarten, and the family does not lack food and medical assistance.

The Sapescu family is not the only beneficiary of HOMECARE. For a year, the Association supported dozens of refugee families in Răzeni state, who were going through real dramas. Social workers Elena and Raisa have become messengers of joy and hope for the refugees from Răzeni, 25 percent of whom are elderly.

The program of the visit was much broader, the guests being informed about the structure, mission and values of HOMECARE Association, but also about the package of projects implemented by the organization, in this sense the results and impact related to the project financed by Help – Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe were pointed out. The director of HOMECARE Association, Mrs. Tamara Adasan, thanked the partners and emphasized the importance of supporting the refugees from Ukraine in the Republic of Moldova in order to protect their right to life, access to health and dignified conditions to continue their lives.

In the development of cooperation area, the partners talked about the opportunity to continue collaboration through the implementation of joint humanitarian and development projects, financially supported by the International Organization Help – Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe.

The “Medical and social services for Ukrainian refugees from Moldova-Phase II” project involves a package of assistance for Ukrainian refugees, who are either transiting or staying in the Republic of Moldova. The support includes offline or online consultations in the fields of law, psychology, or guidance to specialized social or medical services.

At the same time, refugees can receive assistance in relation to various authorities of the Republic of Moldova, or in the initiation of small businesses in case they settle in the Republic of Moldova.
